Jeelz Space-- Live Debugging Life -- October 04 Life for Rent - DidoStumbled upon Dido on Pandora; She is super talented. Most of her songs were written by her most of the time and most of those songs were inspired by incidents from her own life. Brilliant Lyrics --
Here are a few words from a song called Life for Rent --
...Its just a thought, only a thought
If my life is for rent and I don't learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get Cos nothing I have is truly mine... A few more lines from another song called Thank You -
...I want to thank you
for giving me the best day of my life Oh just to be with you is having the best day of my life... ...and saving the best for the last - White Flag, its difficult to pick only a few lines from this song -- the whole song is just so wonderful. But here goes -
And when we meet, Which I'm sure we will
All that was there, Will be there still I'll let it pass, And hold my tongue And you will think, That I've moved on....
December 25 The Future is a lot differentSpeeding down the road in Bangalore a few days ago, happen to glance at a billboard, which best I can recollect read -
"The future is a lot different than what it used to be"
for some reason I believe it had Arthur C Clarke's name beside it (I couldn't find any sources online backing it, so I'm not sure if I read it right). Like they say what was said is more important than who said it, so its not really whether Sir Clarke said those words or not that matters as much as the fact that its such a profound thought.
Though in the past I generally wrote about what these means to me, would like to leave them this time around without describing how I feel about them, but let you see for yourself what you have in your mind. November 05 Its that time again....Its time again - for another major release of Windows, this time around after quite a long gap. And Boy is this release gonna rock the boat! This time is special for me in more than just one way - Its nice to see the release fall through from the inside - from being a (Micro)softie myself. Now is an exciting time to be a part of Microsoft, almost every part of the company thats been working on its biggest software release ever comes together to evaluate what they've built and if its ready to be incorported into the operating system in any fashion or not. I've been lucky to be involved in two such areas the SDK and the other which I can't speak of yet.
The most exciting part is to see all the various pieces being made that will go into the Operating System coming together and all status-es going green. It’s happening for real, we soon will be GO for Launch! Some of these green lights are even visible outside of the company - The new Windows Media Player 11 has RTWed, IE7 which will ship with Windows Vista has RTW for example.
A reliability study that just ended with a little over a 1000 Microsoft employees has yielded good results so far - Exciting times! I think this is bigger than NASA! This Windows release will impact the life's of more people than anything ever before. We've made sure that the software is rock solid and you have a great experience when we ship it! Ofcourse as with any major release there will be initial glitches - keep throwing the stones at us when you hit a problem and we will be there to fix it for you.
This is only the beginning - Windows Vista is only the platform for the next generation of Software and Services (and I like to call this out explicitly - GAMES! :) ) - The NYTimes Reader (http://firstlook.nytimes.com/index.php?cat=4) is just an example of the kind of Software you can expect to see on the new platform - look forward to be amazed by more such software and services coming in the next few weeks and months. Windows Vista will sure rock the boat!!
...and oh BTW by the time you read this - you are already almost 5 minutes closer to the Launch of Windows Vista! :) June 17 Thursday, 15th July 2006 - Hello *New* WorldThe world will never be the same - at least for me. Took me a while to let the dust settle in, and to realize the press conference and the emails that I saw on Thursday were really real. The man responsible for changing the world, to what it is today, is talking about transition plans from the company he created from scratch. Did he choke while ending his talk and introducing Ballmer? I can't believe he said all that till the end with a broad smile. Bill Gates is to Software what Einstein is to Physics. We can't imagine Einstein having had said he will work on Physics part time can we? But then again, this is Bill Gates we are talking about - he is one of a kind - he does the right thing. Software means more to me than Physics - explains why I still have to pinch myself to actually make me believe this is all real. Where ever you are reading this blog from, I can say with 93% certainty that you are reading it on the software that Microsoft created. For me Microsoft is much more than just a software company that I work for - its a way of life, everything that you do, you impact millions of people, changing the world is a habit at Microsoft. The 70,000 of us worldwide, are inspired to do that only by the *xtra larger than life* leadership. Anybody who has had even a glimpse of the passion and aggression expressed in our annual company meetings and global briefings knows Microsoft isn't to be taken lightly; this isn't just a company, its probably 1 point less than being a religion. No matter how humble Gates was being during the press conference on Thursday in saying that his contribution to the hot new products Microsoft comes out with is over estimated - Well Mr. Gates every employee in your company can do that cause he/she is inspired by you, its not *just* your technical talent, its just the person that you are that inspires everything we do. Being successful is probably the easy part - what is difficult is not to let success get to your head - not to let the success we've had in the past to change us, not to let that change then cause us not to be successful in the future. Gates has been an inspiration and an icon for me in this respect. Being humble when being the worlds richest man I'm sure isn't easy. I still recall from late 2005 in my second meeting with Gates, a colleague of mine asked (the most asked question) how is it being the worlds richest man? Gates giggled - and then the reply he gave was almost identical to what he said this Thursday, with wealth comes responsibility and he feels responsible on how he spends his wealth and that he has to give back to society the wealth the society has given him in the right areas which is health and education. No one can replace Gates at Microsoft - he will be very dearly missed. I'm sure he will continue to stand by us and continue to inspire the teams at Microsoft even after two years to head out and "Change the world, in ways, it needs to be changed". In the era of the dotcom boom - I remember seeing an advertisement of a company called 3rd agenda. The advertisement carried the justification for the company's name - Gods 1st Agenda was to create the world, 2nd to send his messengers to spread religion and this company was entrusted with the 3rd agenda which was to evangelize technology. At that time, way back in the year 2000, I was amused but nothing else by the wit. Today it comes back to me. I'm a religious person, have strong belief in god and his prophets, I also believe that there will no more prophets. Maybe technology was really next on Gods agenda, maybe we really are witnessing the execution of the 3rd Agenda. Nothing has changed in the past 30 years as much as Technology and Gates was at the center and was responsible for most of this change. Though it’s very difficult for me to accept the fact that Gates will no longer be our Cheif Software Architect but for the nobel cause that Gates will be devoting his time to two years from now, my respect for Gates has only grown many folds. Friday morning saw the dawn of a whole new era, a whole new Microsoft, a whole new world. The leadership that gates is handing over the flag to is strong, young, energetic, inspired, aggresive and passionate about changing the world in just the same way that Gates was 31 years ago. Hello *New* World. Microsoft's leadership might have changed but not its source of inspiration - which has only got stronger, with which we will build better products that out customers can derive more value from, With Gates still as our Chairman we will continue to, in Gates's words, “change the world, in ways, it needs to be changed”. November 27 The history of the future...I hated history - While in high school, I had no clue why in the world would any sane person in this world would be interested in learning the past when the future seems so exciting. Why in the world spend time look back when you can look ahead and create exciting things for the future?
I don’t know if I’m growing old or what, I'm surprising myself by being interested in the history of computing, starting in the year 1976 of course - ok I know that’s much earlier than I was even born - but hey - getting to know what Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were up to then - sure suddenly has begun to Interest me - the making of the worlds first "real" (some tend to call it "personal" - but I prefer calling it "real") computer that had a Monitor came out back then. Here's a take on its configuration
CPU: MOS Technology 6502
CPU Speed: 1 MHz Bus Speed: 1 MHz Data Path: 8 bit Onboard RAM: 8 kB Maximum RAM: 32 kB VRAM: 1 kB Max Resolution: 60.05 Hz, 40x24 char (reminder - its Chars not Pixels ;-) All that for a bargain price of just $666.66 (A little devil of a price or what?) ;-)
IBM never would have ever thought this puny 1Mhz machine had the potential to destroy its dominance, I really admire Steve Jobs vision. www.apple-history.com has a whole bunch of very very interesting facts on Apple computers - here's a link to a print ad from a 1976 newspaper for the Apple I (courtesy - www.apple-history.com).
Apple's controversial 1984 commercial and the launch of the Apple Macintosh is a historic (cant believe i said that) moment - the dawn of the GUI era. But hey it was a bit too late for Apple though - Bill Gates already had incorporated the GUI in Windows 1.0 - yeup pretty much a more important historic moment - the first version of Windows ever. I have Windows 1.0 running on a Virtual PC on my laptop, it cant even detect my mouse ;-) or hey wait a min - did it use a mouse? The after years lead to a down fall of Apple and a huge rise for Microsoft and the IBM "clone" PCs - then later came to be called Intel Pentium "clone" PCs - or simply still Windows PCs :-)
Just like how the GUI changed computing forever, I firmly believe that we stand today at the threshold of yet another breakthrough in computing. The world will change forever; the next wave of computing is all set to sweep across, the Services wave is here to stay. Look forward to www.live.com on how it can change your world.
Hey maybe History isn't all that bad - after all “today” is the “history of the future”... and darn been thinking about "History" a bit too much these days - I just hope it’s not about me getting older ;-). Realizing the dream....Realizing the dream.... Your Data, Any Time, Any Place on Any Device... Bill Gates spoke about it - Standing up on stage in Orlando, Florida on a Wednesday morning in July 2000 (Read the whole speech here and here). Five years later - we see this dream being realized in its totality.
Technology such as Microsoft's Folder Share (www.foldershare.com) lets you share your windows folders over the internet so that you can access you data from just about anywhere - anywhere where you have an Internet connection. Vendors such as Orb Networks (www.orb.com) allow you to share your media including MP3z, Videos, photos and even "live" TV from your computer to any device - any where on the planet - all that you need is an Internet endpoint - which could be any device capable of hooking up to the Internet, including but not limited to your PDA, Cell phone, Tablet or what the heck I forgot .. it could very well be just another PC ;-) and all this is FREE! Is that cool or what?
These services that we see today are just like the rays of the rising sun - what we will see in the coming years will be astonishing. We are being welcomed into the dawn of a new era in the software industry, an era where unlimited network bandwidth ushers us into a whole new world where services with unlimited potential are all set to change our world forever. Stay tuned to www.live.com - the future isn't just what you have in mind - it’s just a whole lot better. July 03 The prettiest thing to meet the eye... the night sky!Funny I can’t sleep longer than 5 hours at a stretch these days - I used to require at least 8 if not 9 hours before (yeah I know I’m a pretty lazy bum - but hey they have been times when I found (code) solutions even in my dreams!!) :)
I woke up at about 1am today; finding myself looking up at the clear, summer, star lit sky. Its "BEAUTIFUL" - the stars speak from the past in the quietness of the night (the light we see from the nearest one in the night sky being about 4.5 years old). There is so much more for us to learn, but yes there is so much we've already learnt. Though my philosophy is always not to look back and see how much we've accomplished but only to look ahead to see how much further we have to go, It does intrigue me as to what man might have had thought when he looked up at the night sky maybe a few thousand years ago - must have had been a very pretty scene, with no air (and even "electricity light") pollution, truly an astronomers dream.
But at the same time I’m sure with the lack of knowledge, it must have had been a pretty scary scene, not sure as to what and where all the shiny light came from. Its interesting to see what the Egyptians learnt from watching the night sky - apparently they didn’t find it very amusing* - but they were very much aware of five of the planets in our solar system - Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn and Venus. They thought of them as deities sailing across the heavens - they (even quite a lot of people now) believe that stars influence human destiny. The ancient Egyptians regarded many stars and constellations as gods (the brightest star in the night sky "Sirrus" was the goddess Sopdet, The Orion was god Sah). They couldn't recognize more than 5 constellations in the universe (Amenhope catalog). They however, did recognize a few groups of stars which they used to tell time at night.
Compare that with today, we have man made satellites orbiting or at least "visiting" most of these planets. We have remotely "driven" around on these planets but yet the universe is so vast - there is so much more to go. They say the Egyptians not being very good at geometry was one of the major reason for they not catching up on Astronomy. If geometry was one of their fall point then one of ours is of course our inability to travel faster across our endless (as we know it) universe. I remember presenting to a bunch of my fellow colleagues on space travel and how we "could" make it at light "warp" speed :) then that’s theory (let me repeat, theory not fantasy) but if we could make it, then there are quite a few place for us to go..I don’t want to ofcourse get into Space/Time travel now, if you are curious do take a look at www.spacetimetravel.org if you haven’t yet.
... now maybe I should go catch up on some sleep :) June 26 Centrifugal force and falling out of loveCentrifugal force is a term that is used to express that if an object is being swung around on a string the object seems to be pulling on the string. In actual fact the person holding the string is doing the pulling. When the object picks up speed, then if no force is exerted the object will continue in a straight line. To make the object deviate from that straight line a force must be exerted. Having seen a close friend of mine go through a break up recently, I found close resemblance with centrifugal force and being in (and out) of love. Once the object tied to the string picks up speed, the force exerted by the object is tremendous, the person holding the string feels that they are pulling the piece together, whereas from the object perspective the object seems to be doing the pulling. When finally either the string breaks or the person lets go of the string, the object breaks free and continues in a straight line. The energy at that point in time is note worthy, people do amazing things in anything they throw themselves into; could be work, could be a "passion" they always wanted to pursue. Some get into a rebound relationship :). Its like a planet rotating around a star, its centrifugal force that keeps the planet spinning around the star, once the star breaks through this force (theoretically), it moves at a great speed and can go far, unless it falls into the gravitational force of yet another star. March 19 The Man, The Device, The Platform, The Legend...Was privileged enough to meet up with Bill Mitchell this week. For those who do not know who Bill is - He's the guy who can be known as the father of Pocket PC and ActiveSync. It was under him that the Pocket PC project was initiated in 1993. He currently is the Corporate Vice President for the Windows Mobile Platforms Division at Microsoft. Bill has an awesome vision for the Tablet PC - he is the only guy so far who could convince that even I who cant read my own handwriting and who has almost forgotten to write very much needs a Tablet PC. He got me thinking no matter how geeky we become - how much we type more than write - we still do use a pen, not always to write though, I see developers in the cafeteria always scribbling on a paper napkin, drawing (uml?? :-) ) diagrams. Imagine if you could scribble on a tablet instead? Convert it into an image and email it for review? The Tablet platform defn. has a lot of potential in the future. January 12 This world, through our five sensesI've always been a Need for Speed fan - a common characteristic in this series of games which now is a part of many other driving games is that you start off with some basic cars and race tracks - you play well on them and win points to unlock other tracks. I wonder if god has something like this in store for us too. It’s an amazingly beautiful world he has built for us - It amazes me every time I look down my microscope, I’m amazed every time I look at the moon, I’m amazed every time I hear the waves, I'm amazed they way the air taste's on those beaches, I'm amazed at how beautiful a rose can smell, but what amazes me even more is the fact that god's given us only 5 senses to perceive such a beautiful world! Such a beautiful brain in each one of our heads, but it only makes sense out from what these 5 senses tell it - Or is there more for us to be unlocked? Intrigues me.... I'll let it boggle your mind and end with this wonderful quote... "I not only think we will tamper with Mother Nature, I think that Mother Nature wants us to." - Willard Gatlin - Jeelz January 08 We don’t have a voice, when our heart makes a choiceI kinda believe that life is full of choices, we choose what to do, some of us are cautious with the choices we make and hold ourselves responsible for the outcomes - some of us dont, They simply need someone to blame it all on. I guess even actions are so very much controlled by the options a person has - We at all times maybe consciously or unconsciously weigh the choices we have and choose to do what we hold the closest to our hearts. I kinda like to use this philosophy of mine to use it as a backdoor to read a persons mind - though I may not be right always, but ones actions, the choices the person makes, make it so obvious as to how much something which could be as minimal as a teeny weenie gift to a friendship means to that person. Am I totally off the mark? or u think likewise?? - Jeelz January 06 An appointment with the architect of the universeIn a recent auction for employees a dinner with the Chief Architect of the worlds most hi tech company went for a pretty unbelievable hefty sum (the whole purpose of the auction was to raise charity ofcourse!). However, I was just wondering how much would we be willing to pay for an appointment with the architect of the universe? somebody who is responsible for the conceptualization, design, dev and testin from every li'l red blood cell to the dark deep space spanning eternity? I get super excited at the thought that I could probably create a backup of my life's record and run it thru a simulation and check alternates like what might have had happened if I didn’t choose to do engineering, what and where would i be today? What if Einstein was never born? And imagine having the resources to understand the working and alternatives and design considerations that were made during the creation of the universe - I would say its worth dying for!! :-)
- Jeelz December 19 Yada... Yada... Yada...Yada... Yada... Yada... My very own MSN Space - looking forward to postin' info on life and my encounters with it ... anything technical - goes here... http://blogs.msdn.com/mjeelani Jeelz |
