The Future is a lot different

Speeding down the road in Bangalore a few days ago, happen to glance at a billboard, which best I can recollect read -

"The future is a lot different than what it used to be"

for some reason I believe it had Arthur C Clarke's name beside it (I couldn't find any sources online backing it, so I'm not sure if I read it right). Like they say what was said is more important than who said it, so its not really whether Sir Clarke said those words or not that matters as much as the fact that its such a profound thought.

Though in the past I generally wrote about what these means to me, would like to leave them this time around without describing how I feel about them, but let you see for yourself what you have in your mind.

Its that time again....

Its time again - for another major release of Windows, this time around after quite a long gap. And Boy is this release gonna rock the boat! This time is special for me in more than just one way - Its nice to see the release fall through from the inside - from being a (Micro)softie myself. Now is an exciting time to be a part of Microsoft, almost every part of the company thats been working on its biggest software release ever comes together to evaluate what they've built and if its ready to be incorported into the operating system in any fashion or not. I've been lucky to be involved in two such areas the SDK and the other which I can't speak of yet.

The most exciting part is to see all the various pieces being made that will go into the Operating System coming together and all status-es going green.  It’s happening for real, we soon will be GO for Launch! Some of these green lights are even visible outside of the company - The new Windows Media Player 11 has RTWed, IE7 which will ship with Windows Vista has RTW for example.

A reliability study that just ended with a little over a 1000 Microsoft employees has yielded good results so far - Exciting times! I think this is bigger than NASA! This Windows release will impact the life's of more people than anything ever before. We've made sure that the software is rock solid and you have a great experience when we ship it! Ofcourse as with any major release there will be initial glitches - keep throwing the stones at us when you hit a problem and we will be there to fix it for you.
This is only the beginning - Windows Vista is only the platform for the next generation of Software and Services (and I like to call this out explicitly - GAMES! :) ) - The NYTimes Reader (http://firstlook.nytimes.com/index.php?cat=4) is just an example of the kind of Software you can expect to see on the new platform - look forward to be amazed by more such software and services coming in the next few weeks and months. Windows Vista will sure rock the boat!!
...and oh BTW by the time you read this - you are already almost 5 minutes closer to the Launch of Windows Vista! :)

Thursday, 15th July 2006 - Hello *New* World

The world will never be the same - at least for me. Took me a while to let the dust settle in, and to realize the press conference and the emails that I saw on Thursday were really real. The man responsible for changing the world, to what it is today, is talking about transition plans from the company he created from scratch. Did he choke while ending his talk and introducing Ballmer? I can't believe he said all that till the end with a broad smile. Bill Gates is to Software what Einstein is to Physics. We can't imagine Einstein having had said he will work on Physics part time can we? But then again, this is Bill Gates we are talking about - he is one of a kind - he does the right thing. Software means more to me than Physics - explains why I still have to pinch myself to actually make me believe this is all real.

Where ever you are reading this blog from, I can say with 93% certainty that you are reading it on the software that Microsoft created. For me Microsoft is much more than just a software company that I work for - its a way of life, everything that you do, you impact millions of people, changing the world is a habit at Microsoft. The 70,000 of us worldwide, are inspired to do that only by the *xtra larger than life* leadership. Anybody who has had even a glimpse of the passion and aggression expressed in our annual company meetings and global briefings knows Microsoft isn't to be taken lightly; this isn't just a company, its probably 1 point less than being a religion. No matter how humble Gates was being during the press conference on Thursday in saying that his contribution to the hot new products Microsoft comes out with is over estimated - Well Mr. Gates every employee in your company can do that cause he/she is inspired by you, its not *just* your technical talent, its just the person that you are that inspires everything we do.

Being successful is probably the easy part - what is difficult is not to let success get to your head - not to let the success we've had in the past to change us, not to let that change then cause us not to be successful in the future. Gates has been an inspiration and an icon for me in this respect. Being humble when being the worlds richest man I'm sure isn't easy. I still recall from late 2005 in my second meeting with Gates, a colleague of mine asked (the most asked question) how is it being the worlds richest man? Gates giggled - and then the reply he gave was almost identical to what he said this Thursday, with wealth comes responsibility and he feels responsible on how he spends his wealth and that he has to give back to society the wealth the society has given him in the right areas which is health and education. No one can replace Gates at Microsoft - he will be very dearly missed. I'm sure he will continue to stand by us and continue to inspire the teams at Microsoft even after two years to head out and "Change the world, in ways, it needs to be changed".

In the era of the dotcom boom - I remember seeing an advertisement of a company called 3rd agenda. The advertisement carried the justification for the company's name - Gods 1st Agenda was to create the world, 2nd to send his messengers to spread religion and this company was entrusted with the 3rd agenda which was to evangelize technology. At that time, way back in the year 2000, I was amused but nothing else by the wit. Today it comes back to me. I'm a religious person, have strong belief in god and his prophets, I also believe that there will no more prophets. Maybe technology was really next on Gods agenda, maybe we really are witnessing the execution of the 3rd Agenda. Nothing has changed in the past 30 years as much as Technology and Gates was at the center and was responsible for most of this change.

Though it’s very difficult for me to accept the fact that Gates will no longer be our Cheif Software Architect but for the nobel cause that Gates will be devoting his time to two years from now, my respect for Gates has only grown many folds.

Friday morning saw the dawn of a whole new era, a whole new Microsoft, a whole new world. The leadership that gates is handing over the flag to is strong, young, energetic, inspired, aggresive and passionate about changing the world in just the same way that Gates was 31 years ago. Hello *New* World. Microsoft's leadership might have changed but not its source of inspiration - which has only got stronger, with which we will build better products that out customers can derive more value from, With Gates still as our Chairman we will continue to, in Gates's words, “change the world, in ways, it needs to be changed”.

The history of the future...

I hated history - While in high school, I had no clue why in the world would any sane person in this world would be interested in learning the past when the future seems so exciting. Why in the world spend time look back when you can look ahead and create exciting things for the future?

I don’t know if I’m growing old or what, I'm surprising myself by being interested in the history of computing, starting in the year 1976 of course - ok I know that’s much earlier than I was even born - but hey - getting to know  what Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were up to then - sure suddenly has begun to Interest me - the making of the worlds first "real" (some tend to call it "personal" - but I prefer calling it "real") computer that had a Monitor came out back then. Here's a take on its configuration

CPU: MOS Technology 6502
CPU Speed: 1 MHz
Bus Speed: 1 MHz
Data Path: 8 bit
Onboard RAM: 8 kB
Maximum RAM: 32 kB
VRAM: 1 kB
Max Resolution: 60.05 Hz, 40x24 char (reminder - its Chars not Pixels ;-)

All that for a bargain price of just $666.66 (A little devil of a price or what?) ;-)

IBM never would have ever thought this puny 1Mhz machine had the potential to destroy its dominance, I really admire Steve Jobs vision. www.apple-history.com has a whole bunch of very very interesting facts on Apple computers - here's a link to a print ad from a 1976 newspaper for the Apple I (courtesy - www.apple-history.com).

Apple's controversial 1984 commercial and the launch of the Apple Macintosh is a historic (cant believe i said that) moment - the dawn of the GUI era. But hey it was a bit too late for Apple though - Bill Gates already had incorporated the GUI in Windows 1.0 - yeup pretty much a more important historic moment - the first version of Windows ever. I have Windows 1.0 running on a Virtual PC on my laptop, it cant even detect my mouse ;-) or hey wait a min - did it use a mouse? The after years lead to a down fall of Apple and a huge rise for Microsoft and the IBM "clone" PCs - then later came to be called Intel Pentium "clone" PCs - or simply still Windows PCs :-)

Just like how the GUI changed computing forever, I firmly believe that we stand today at the threshold of yet another breakthrough in computing. The world will change forever; the next wave of computing is all set to sweep across, the Services wave is here to stay. Look forward to www.live.com on how it can change your world.

Hey maybe History isn't all that bad - after all “today” is the “history of the future”... and darn been thinking about "History" a bit too much these days - I just hope it’s not about me getting older ;-).

Realizing the dream....

Realizing the dream.... Your Data, Any Time, Any Place on Any Device... Bill Gates spoke about it - Standing up on stage in Orlando, Florida on a Wednesday morning in July 2000 (Read the whole speech here and here). Five years later - we see this dream being realized in its totality.

Technology such as Microsoft's Folder Share (www.foldershare.com) lets you share your windows folders over the internet so that you can access you data from just about anywhere -  anywhere where you have an Internet connection. Vendors such as Orb Networks (www.orb.com) allow you to share your media including MP3z, Videos, photos and even "live" TV from your computer to any device - any where on the planet - all that you need is an Internet endpoint - which could be any device capable of hooking up to the Internet, including but not limited to your PDA, Cell phone, Tablet or what the heck I forgot .. it could very well be just another PC ;-)  and all this is FREE! Is that cool or what?

These services that we see today are just like the rays of the rising sun - what we will see in the coming years will be astonishing. We are being welcomed into the dawn of a new era in the software industry, an era where unlimited network bandwidth ushers us into a whole new world where services with unlimited potential are all set to change our world forever. Stay tuned to www.live.com - the future isn't just what you have in mind - it’s just a whole lot better.
